Open Access & Open Education
Memorial has a long and diverse history of supporting and initiating projects that promote open access and open education. In fact, the university currently has open projects that touch each of its frameworks: public engagement, research, and teaching and learning.
Research
In April 2012, the Senate of Memorial University approved the Memorial University Statement on Open Access, which supports and encourages the open dissemination of research output.
Memorial Libraries have several initiatives in place that support and promote open access and scholarly communications. These include a Research Repository, Open Access Journal Hosting, and Open Access Author's Fund.
The Journal of Ocean Technology (JoT) is a quarterly periodical published by the Marine Institute. It was one of Memorial's earliest adopters of Open Access publishing, providing unrestricted access to peer reviewed technical papers since 2006. Technical papers submitted by authors affiliated with Memorial University are also available in the Research Repository.
Teaching and Learning
Linney is an open learning object repository supported by Memorial University where rich learning objects can be discovered and used to augment a world of projects and curriculum. Developed by the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL), this comprehensive repository is available to Newfoundland and Labrador’s K-20 public education system and aims to promote an atmosphere of sharing where learning objects can be searched, reused, repurposed, and contributed.

Public Engagement
Memorial's online public engagement tool, Yaffle.ca, was launched in 2009. Led by the Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, Yaffle.ca connects Memorial with the public, offering access to the University's research expertise and projects. Yaffle.ca also helps Memorial respond to the needs of the province and the world, allowing the public to submit ideas and requests for project assistance, which are then brokered through the University.
